Our Programs

CAMP TANAGER was established in 1926 so children could participate in a summer camp experience regardless of financial circumstances.  Camp Tanager is administered by Tanager Place and is supervised by a Camp Director.  The staff/camper ratio (1:6) permits a high degree of interaction between Camp Counselors and campers.  Seven 1 week sessions are available between June and August each year for children aged 7 - 11 years.

DIABETES CAMP at Camp Tanager provides children and adolescents with Diabetes a safe and healthy environment to enjoy a variety of recreational activities designed for fun and fitness.  At the same time children with Diabetes acquire a better understanding of their disorder.  The Diabetes Camp began in 1987 and serves 50-60 children annually.  The camp held each July has an on-site 24-hour physician and nursing staff.

HEMOPHILIA CAMP is held each year in mid-June.  This special camp is one of a kind in the mid-west.  During the six-day camp children with Hemophilia and their siblings participate in individual and group activities designed for fun and fitness.  They also gain a better understanding of Hemophilia and its effects on individuals and families.  The Hemophilia Camp has a 24-hour physician and nursing staff.  The camp began in 1986 and serves 50-60 children with Hemophilia and their siblings each year.

Note:  Camp Tanager employs college age students as camp counselors.

Camp Tanager is a recreation opportunity, not a treatment facility.

THERE IS NO CHARGE to families of campers or referring agencies.  Campers are selected based

on financial need.  Camp applications are distributed through your local school district and guidance

counselor.  All activities are provided through on-going support of Camp Tanager benefactors,

including the Cedar Rapids Gazette and its employees.  Camp Tanager now serves over 600

children each summer providing rich educational experiences for campers in an atmosphere of fun.

ACTIVITIES - Campers may participate in a wide variety of traditional camping activities including

swimming, singing camp songs, sports and games, educational speakers, hiking, physical

activities, arts & crafts, archery and nature studies.  Campers will have the opportunity to make
